We often hear the same question from our customers: " Why do I need Starlink adaptation from Adaptis if I can put the terminal in the car interior just under the glass?"
And this question is quite logical: why overpay if Starlink – is this a ready-to-use device? It seems that it is enough to attach it to the windshield or the rear shelf of the cabin, connect the power – and there is the Internet.
However, in an attempt to "save money," you are actually paying full price for a device that will only operate at 10% of its capabilities in the car's interior.
Let's figure out why we recommend placing Starlink on the roof of your car.
Safety factors for passengers inside the car
The main factor is the safety of passengers. The terminal is usually attached to the glass using vacuum suction cups, which have the property of de-vacuuming, for example, due to temperature changes. If this happens while driving, the terminal can injure passengers. During an emergency stop or other emergency situation, this is also an additional risk, especially if the terminal was attached to the windshield.
Glass blocks the Starlink terminal signal
Another reason we don't recommend installing Starlink inside a vehicle is that car glass is a physical barrier to the satellite signal. It won't block the signal completely, but it will significantly weaken it.
Modern car glass, especially windshields, often has a special athermal coating. This is a microscopic layer of metal spraying that protects the interior from solar heat. However, for the antenna, this layer becomes a screen that scatters the signal or does not let it through at all. For stable operation, Starlink requires an open sky, but in the car interior, the metal roof and pillars create “blind spots.” This becomes a serious obstacle, as modern Starlink models, such as the Mini and Gen 3, have a fixed 110° viewing angle, which makes them critically sensitive to even slight overlaps of the sky with parts of the car roof. As a result, the device is forced to search for a new signal every minute, and constant reconnection makes using the network on the road unstable.
Risks of overheating the terminal
One of the reasons why there is a desire to install Starlink inside the cabin is the fear that in winter, due to low temperatures, the terminal may freeze or fail. However, these fears are in vain, because it is designed to work in various conditions, even extreme ones, as it has a self-heating function, thanks to which snow and ice on the surface of Starlink melts. In fact, overheating is much more dangerous for Starlink than cold. During operation, the terminal emits a significant amount of heat. In a closed cabin, especially under the windshield, a greenhouse effect occurs. Under direct sunlight, the cabin heats up quickly, and through the glass, the temperature near the dashboard can easily reach 70°C.
In such conditions, Starlink's internal sensors detect critical overheating. To prevent components from burning out, the device automatically reduces power or shuts down completely.
How can we really protect Starlink?
Professional solution: Starlink housing from Adaptis
Instead of hiding the terminal in the car interior, we offer you a professional solution from Adaptis – a special protective case for Starlink, which is installed directly on the roof of the car.
This solution solves all problems at once: the device gets a perfect view of the sky without any obstacles, and the terminal remains fully protected from mechanical damage, branches and precipitation, etc. The Adaptis case reliably protects the terminal during transport: high-strength ABS plastic 3 mm thick and powerful neodymium magnets guarantee stable fixation.
Thanks to improved aerodynamics, you will be able to use high-speed Internet even while driving at high speed.
For those who value not only functionality but also style, we offer our premium kits. These are individual Starlink adaptations that we perform in the color of your car so that the equipment looks aesthetically pleasing. When ordering, you must indicate that you want to purchase a premium kit and provide the paint code of the car color.
The Adaptis solution allows you to use 100% of the functionality of Starlink technologies, ensuring reliability and safety on the road anywhere.
Adaptis – communication where it's needed.
