Top 5 mistakes when using Starlink and how to avoid them

Топ 5 помилок при користуванні Starlink та як їх уникнути

It might seem that Starlink is easy to turn on and does not require complex settings. However, many people still make mistakes while using the terminal. As a result, the connection is constantly interrupted, and the device itself is at risk of needing repairs much sooner than it should.

Most problems arise not from network failures, but from improper connection or transportation.

Here are the 5 main mistakes that can harm your Starlink and how to avoid them:

1. Installing the antenna in a place without a clear view of the sky

The most common mistake is placing the terminal under tree branches, near high house walls, or any other objects that obstruct the view. At first glance, it seems that small branches or the edge of a roof won't interfere with the signal. However, for stable terminal operation, a view of the sky of at least 110 degrees is required. Starlink satellites move through orbit at high speeds, and the terminal constantly switches connections from one craft to another. Even a minor obstacle obstructing this angle causes short-term signal interruptions.

2. Incorrect power supply and neglecting surge protection

Attempting to power Starlink from any random source is one of the fastest ways to break it. The equipment needs stable voltage—just like any other device. If you use cheap car inverters or old generators, the terminal receives unstable power with constant current fluctuations.

Because of this, Starlink starts constantly rebooting, loses the network, and drops connections. Worst of all, sudden voltage surges can burn out the board inside, and that is when the terminal will require repairs.

If you use Starlink in a car or from batteries, it is important to connect it through proven equipment. For example, we offer our clients the use of UPS or car chargers. We explained what these are and how they differ in a separate article.

3. Mechanical damage and incorrect cable routing

The Starlink cable transmits both internet data and the electric current to power the terminal. If you pinch it in a door, trap it in a car window, pull it too tight, or bend it during transport, the copper wires inside can break. The cable may look intact from the outside, but internal damage causes glitches: speed drops, the network constantly disappears, or the antenna stops turning on altogether. Also, keep the connectors clean during frequent reconnections. If you insert a dirty or dusty plug into the jack, it will damage the contacts and can lead to a short circuit.

4. Improper placement of the Wi-Fi router indoors

Sometimes it seems that satellite internet is working slowly, although the real problem is weak Wi-Fi. The Starlink router provides high speeds at close range, but the further away you are from it, the worse the connection becomes.

To avoid losing speed, place the router closer to the area where you most often work or use the internet. If you need to cover a large area or several rooms, it is better to add a Mesh module, which will simply extend the zone of high-quality connection.

5. Use without additional equipment protection, such as an Adaptis case

Like any other device, Starlink is constantly subject to external influences. And since it is designed for outdoor use—due to the nature of the technology, it cannot be used otherwise—it is inherently robust, has a high level of IP protection against dust and water, and easily withstands various physical factors. However, during frequent relocations and constant operation, the device can still be damaged: connectors, cables, or the surface of the terminal itself often suffer from impacts during transport.

To better protect the terminal and significantly extend its service life, it is worth using a protective case from Adaptis. It is made of durable ABS plastic, so it absorbs all mechanical stressors, cushions impacts, and saves the device from wear and tear. Most importantly, it does not interfere with the device's operation.

Conclusion

Most problems with Starlink arise not from network failures, but from simple mistakes during use. For the terminal to work at its maximum and not fail, it is enough to provide it with an open view of the sky, stable power, and reliable protection against external factors. Basic care and proper equipment will save you a lot of time, nerves, and money on repairs.
