The desire to save money is a natural approach when buying any equipment, so many people consider buying used devices. Starlink terminals are no exception. The purchase scenarios are completely different: some have never used this technology and want to understand if satellite communication is right for them, without overpaying. Others choose it for economy, and some need the device urgently "here and now," without the long wait for international delivery.
The secondary market provides an excellent opportunity to get what you want cheaper and faster. However, it is important to note that a Starlink terminal is tied to a user account, without which the device simply will not work. Therefore, for the purchase of a used terminal to actually bring benefits, not problems, it is important to understand how to approach the choice of purchase correctly.
Starlink secondary market in Ukraine
The secondary market for Starlink terminals in Ukraine is currently saturated with offers. The main consumers of used equipment are units of the Defense Forces, charitable foundations, private businesses, critical infrastructure operators, and civilians in regions with unstable communication. Buying a used terminal significantly reduces costs but requires an understanding of SpaceX's service specifics.
A Starlink terminal is a complex hardware and software system. Its full operation is possible only if two elements are combined: the physical integrity of the "hardware" (antenna, cable, router, power supply unit) and the active status of the digital account in the company's billing system.
Advantages and disadvantages of the secondary market
Advantages:
-
Financial benefit: The ability to purchase a kit significantly cheaper than the retail price of a new device.
-
Speed of acquisition: No need to wait for international delivery, which can take weeks.
-
Flexibility for testing: An excellent option for temporary use or getting acquainted with the technology.
Disadvantages:
-
High risks of fraud: The probability of buying a blocked terminal or one tied to someone else's account (this point is especially important now, as a Starlink terminal verification procedure has been introduced in Ukraine, but we will talk about this later)
-
No official warranty: In case of a private transaction, you are left without manufacturer support.
-
Equipment wear: Risk of receiving a device with hidden defects after operation.
What to consider when buying a terminal on the secondary market
When purchasing used equipment, you should pay attention to the following factors:
- No debts: Any outstanding debt from previous subscription periods leads to network access blockage.
- Full transfer of rights: A purchase by simply transferring a password from someone else's email leaves ownership with the seller, who can regain control through SpaceX support at any time.
-
Technical condition of the terminal: It is necessary to check for physical damage to the terminal's body, the integrity of original cables and connectors, and the stability of the device's operation under load.
-
Verification and authorization in Ukraine: The use of Starlink in Ukraine is possible only if the device is added to the "white list." Before selling, the previous owner is obliged to exclude the terminal from the registry. The new owner, after purchasing, must undergo verification and register the device with their data. Otherwise, Starlink will be blocked, meaning you will not be able to use it. By the way, you can read more about the entire verification process in our material.
Account Transfer Algorithm (Transfer Hardware)
1. Go to the website www.starlink.com
2. Log in to your Starlink account (enter email, password, and confirmation code from email)
3. Check for any outstanding debts (it is impossible to transfer a Starlink terminal with debt). The "Due" section should show 0.
4. To perform the transfer, the terminal must be paused. To do this, you need to:
- go to the "Plans" section
- manage the plan
- select "Cancel Service"
- choose any reason for suspension and enter "Arbitrary" in the comments
5. After pausing the terminal, the "Transfer" button will become active in the "Plan" section. Once you click it and confirm the operation, the terminal will be successfully unlinked from your account for new registration.
- click "Save Service"
6. Optionally, you can immediately enter the email address of the user to whom you wish to transfer the use of the Starlink terminal.
Done!
