More and more new information about the planned Starlink equipment update is appearing online. The latest documents filed by the company with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) open an interesting perspective on the new Starlink Wi-Fi router - model UTR-251. According to information from Colby Baber, owner of the Starlink blog DISHYtech, this model is likely to be part of the next generation of Starlink equipment.
What's new in the UTR-251 router
The new router model, according to documents filed with the FCC, is called the UTR-251, indicating a logical development of the previous versions: the UTR-211 (Gen 2) and UTR-231 (Gen 3). Given this, it can be assumed that the new router is part of the launch of the next generation of Starlink. The documents do not specify whether this is simply an updated model for the current equipment, or whether this is the first look at the new Starlink Gen 4 antenna.
One of the important aspects of this model is support for the Wi-Fi 6 standard, which allows for faster speeds and improved coverage. But the innovations don't end there. The UTR-251 router also supports the new 5.9 GHz band, which allows for increased bandwidth and improved wireless network performance.
Updated design and features
Another interesting feature of the new model is the change in router orientation: instead of the horizontal format we saw in the Gen 3, the new router has a vertical design similar to the Gen 2. This could be a convenient upgrade for users who have limited space to place equipment.
It was also noted that the new router will only have one Ethernet port instead of two like previous models, which could be an important point for users who need multiple wired connections.
Should we expect a new Gen 4 antenna?
There is currently no concrete confirmation that the new Starlink Gen 4 antenna will be released alongside the router. However, many experts, including Colby Baber of DISHYtech, believe that it is quite likely. According to Baber, the new router could be released as part of a limited beta testing for long-term customers, and will likely be available for purchase in the coming months.
Interestingly, Starlink previously sold the Gen 3 router separately from the antenna, allowing users to upgrade just the router without changing the satellite dish. This suggests that the new router could be launched without being tied to a new antenna, allowing users to upgrade just a portion of their equipment.
Important technical points
On the technical side, the UTR-251 router will have several improvements, such as support for the 5.9 GHz band, which will allow for expanded bandwidth and improved quality of wireless connections, in particular for connecting to other devices or for feedback in wireless networks.
As for the physical specifications, the new router will be manufactured in Vietnam, according to information in FCC documents. Given the current US customs policy, manufacturing the router in Vietnam could have a significant impact on the final cost of the product for consumers.
Additionally
A piece from PC Magazine , published on April 16, 2025, also confirms this news, although with more focus on other aspects, such as the new router's ability to work with updated satellite dishes, including reduced power consumption. It is noted that the router could be part of a new business dish launch or an updated variant of the Starlink Mini.
All available information about the potential release of the new Starlink business dish has been collected in this material .
